The COVID-19 pandemic is entering its fourth year with China having abandoned its zero-Covid policy, leading to concerns about the emergence of a new variant that could potentially evade immunity conferred by existing vaccines.

The country’s domestic vaccines are less effective than mRNA vaccines used elsewhere and a significant proportion of older citizens have not received a third dose.

There are projections of up to 1.7 million deaths in China by the end of April due to the less effective vaccination rate and a relaxation of containment measures.

The situation is made more unpredictable by China’s recent change in the way it counts COVID-19 deaths and a lack of transparency in reporting new cases.

Scientists are closely monitoring the potential emergence of a new variant, designated as “pi,” which could potentially spread more easily or make people sicker.
