Summary

  • This issue of NEJM Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery contains articles, case studies, and research reports on …

  • … health information exchange policy, palliative care practices, comprehensive care to reduce readmissions, a head and neck cancer clinic, full-cycle stroke care delivery, and patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

NEJM Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery launched as a subscription-based, peer-reviewed journal at the start of 2020, building on our original identity as a Web-based platform.

Our rubric from the start has been to inspire change in health care by bringing innovations and practical applications to our global audience of clinicians, clinical leaders, executives, and researchers.

Our content has been purposefully broad rather than focused on specialties; the transformation of care delivery requires all hands on deck.

At the start of our fourth year of publication, we thank our subscribers for their loyal support and our authors for entrusting us with their work.

The content in this issue exemplifies that breadth, extending from health information policy to machine learning, stroke care to head and neck cancers, and the United States to Brazil.

The Role of State Policy in Fostering Health Information Exchange in the United States,” by Ari Bronsoler, PhD, of Google, Joseph Doyle, PhD, of Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management, Cason Schmit, JD, of Texas A&M University School of Public Health, and John Van Reenen, PhD, MSc, of The London School of Economics and Political Science, is a research study of health information exchange (HIE) across providers.

The authors point to policy levers that can catalyze the use of HIE to improve health and lower health care costs.

Improved Palliative Care Practices Through Machine Learning Prediction of 90-Day Risk of Mortality Following Hospitalization by Kevin E. Kip, PhD, and colleagues describes a tool developed at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center that automatically prompts clinicians to engage with patients with a palliative care consult or a goals-of-care conversation, based on their risk for 90-day mortality

In “ Reducing Readmission Risk Through Whole-Person Design,” Tricia Baird, MD, FAAFP, MBA, and colleagues at Corewell Health recount their use of predictive analytics to assess individual patients’ readmission risk and then provide comprehensive clinical, behavioral, and social support.

Each issue of NEJM Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery contains an Insights Report based on a survey of the NEJM Catalyst Insights Council, a global group of health care leaders and clinicians that we consider the voice of our audience.

Health Care Falls Short for Patients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities,” with Jonathan Gleason, MD, of Prisma Health, finds poor outcomes and insufficient services for these patients and presents solutions, such as effective community-based partnerships.

In the related Insights Interview, Council members from the United States and England discuss the difficult transition from pediatric to adult care for patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
