What is the message

The Mobile World Congress (MWC), held recently in Barcelona, has expanded beyond its original mobile focus. This year, 50% of participants came from outside the telecom industry, reflecting a broader spectrum of technological disruption. Artificial intelligence (AI) was a prominent theme throughout the event.

Conclusions and Recommendations:

  • Prioritize Ecosystems: Companies should actively participate in broader ecosystems to fully leverage AI’s potential.

  • Invest in Talent: Leadership should prioritize workforce upskilling to keep pace with evolving technologies.

  • Embrace Standardization: Align with industry standards and ethical guidelines for sustainable growth.

The Building Blocks of Tech Success

The Mobile World Congress (MWC), which took place this week in Barcelona, has grown well beyond its original focus on all things mobile. It now incorporates a broad spectrum of technological disruption-in fact, 50% of participants at this year’s event came from outside the telecom industry.

That shift was evident not just from the colorful sea of tech company logos but in the central role tech played in all the keynote speeches, panels, and conversations in which BCG’s team on the ground took part-not to mention the fact that the topic of artificial intelligence was everywhere.

It was also interesting to see that the central narrative at this year’s MWC mirrored the building blocks of success long championed by tech natives:

  • It’s essential to build and nurture ecosystems. The message was clear at MWC that AI, including GenAI, will be central to future growth opportunities, requiring investment and innovation along the entire tech value chain. That means companies will have to participate in broader ecosystems to fulfill the potential of the technology.

  • Fostering talent should be a top leadership priority. Technology may have been central to MWC, but there was still plenty of focus on people. With the rapid pace of technological change, companies need to specialize in learning and be able and ready to upskill their workforce in evolving technologies.

  • Standardized technology-and guardrails-will be key. With alliances based on cloud infrastructure, interoperability, and the development of common standards, companies can see faster time to market. And the telecom industry needs to come together to decide on ethical and responsible AI guidelines, sustainability, and data protection.

But the wow factor at MWC still comes from the gadgets, and this year did not disappoint. The event was full of examples of exciting practical applications and readily available technologies.

For one thing, devices keep getting smarter-many of them AI-enabled and supported by the next generation of chips. We also saw a trend toward end-user devices made with innovative, often lighter and more flexible materials, including transparent, rollable, and extendable screens. And there were plenty of immersive technologies to check out, including advancements in computer vision (where AI allows computers to gather information from images and videos) and haptic feedback.

The fact that the conference has moved away from pure telco is a reflection of just how much the lines have blurred within the technology, media, and telecommunications sector. There’s no doubt that the AI revolution presents a call to action-an opportunity for telcos and tech players alike to shape the next sets of standards, principles, and applications that will enable future business models and business advantage.

We sat down with many industry leaders to hear their thoughts on AI, tech trends, and more. Here’s what they had to say.
