Apple is reportedly developing an AI-based chatbot similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, according to a recent report from Bloomberg.

The internal project, codenamed “Apple GPT,” is being built on Apple’s proprietary framework called “Ajax,” which runs on Google Cloud and utilizes Google JAX, Google’s machine learning framework.

The company aims to make a significant AI-related announcement next year but has not finalized its consumer release strategy.

The chatbot was initially withheld due to security concerns surrounding generative AI, but access has been gradually expanded to more Apple employees with special approval.

While the chatbot is being used internally for product prototyping, its outputs cannot be directly integrated into customer-facing features.

Apple’s chatbot lacks distinctive features that would set it apart from existing commercially available solutions like ChatGPT and Bard.

Nonetheless, the company has been actively recruiting generative AI talent to strengthen its AI capabilities.

In contrast to competitors like Google, Microsoft, and Meta, which have rapidly launched generative AI products to the public, Apple has taken a more cautious approach.

While Apple has incorporated AI features into its products and apps over the years, it now seeks to meet consumer demand for AI tools that can assist with tasks such as drafting essays and generating images.

Privacy is a major focus for Apple, and CEO Tim Cook has emphasized the company’s commitment to adding AI features thoughtfully and addressing potential privacy concerns related to artificial intelligence.

Overall, Apple’s pursuit of AI-based solutions signals its intention to compete with established players like OpenAI and Google, catering to the growing demand for advanced AI tools while maintaining its privacy-centric approach.

The company’s forthcoming AI-related announcement is highly anticipated, given its track record of innovation and consumer-focused technologies.
